I am supposed to be cleaning house a bit this afternoon as our granddaughters are coming in on Tuesday. Left up to me, they may have to arrive to a messy house, as instead of cleaning…I started going through pictures!
I found some that will be of interest to anyone from this area. Mendota is in Poor Valley and it’s a river valley. The North Fork of the Holston is our river. It’s a lazy sweet, slow moving river, but on occasion it shows a different side.
Here’s how our river looks normally…a great place to fish, canoe and take pictures!
In 2002, here’s what the North Fork looked like, and this was not when it was at its highest…
Do you know who these folks are that are in the picture? (I do…it’s a test for you!)
This is the Swinging Bridge located at the tressel in Mendota.
I’m still cleaning. If I find more pictures, I’ll put them on RiverCliff Cottage. It’s not the normal thing that bloggers talk about, but since this is my blog…well…I can do what I want to do with it…even look at scary pictures!
Pictured in your picture is Carson and Vicky and Amy and Darrell, I think!
You are right!
My wife (Ginger) and I just purchased 15 acres up just North of Mendota town on the river – Barn Rock Road. what a beautiful valley. we live in Bristol and will continue to do so but love the country. I am traveling internationally until mid next week, and was wondering with all of the rain in the last couple days how much the river has risen?
I think I have replied to this twice! However, I had more to say anyway! You mentioned the Halsteads. David and Bill graduated before 1974 and Sharon graduated after. Mike Venable was a huge loss. I did the memory board for the reunion and names just kept being added. It was very eye opening.
Please stop over when you and Ginger are over our way!
Hey Eva, my family and I were there during the flood. A family of five. We loved coming down to the library. Remember Mikey? Or did you call him Michael? Was thinking about ya’ll the other day, wondering if you were still around Mendota. Today we found your Mendota “fun”. Will try to shoot you a letter soon with pics of family all grown up. Maybe I should send an old pic in case you can’t remember who we are 🙂
I’m trying to remember! Send those pictures!!
Hello! I know this may be hard to believe, but my family was living in that little white house across that swinging bridge at the time of the flood
We litterially had to walk over a mountain to get out till the state rebuilt it months later. The majority of my childhood was spent there, and though I live about 200 miles away, I still visit from time to time. It’s amazing how much has changed, old beautiful homes torn down, dirt roads turned to pavement, all my former neighbors either passed on or moved away, but it always be home to me. I wish I could live there again. A man by the name of Frank Lenored owned the farm, but I know her probably be in his 90’s now.

What a small world! Mr. Leonard passed away last year, but his family still owns the farm. We were neighbors!!! Eva
