Flash Flood in Mendota and Benhams

As I left North Bristol and approached Benhams, a man held his arm out the window and flashed his lights.   I wondered what was going on.

The creeks were out in the road and water was rushing across the pavement.  I drove through it, and I got to the other side, but my car moved.  I was scared.    More water was ahead, but this time I could see the yellow center lines so I drove through cautiously but knew I could reach the other side.

Benhams was a mess.   There’s pictures all over Facebook of the water.   I drove down Nordyke and halfway down encountered this…a log was in the road and Nordyke Creek was there with it.

After the log was moved, it was still too dangerous to go through.   I turned around and went to my cousin’s house.  Mike was able to drive up in the truck and get me.   Since I drive a Prius which is low to the ground, there was no way I was going to drive through water again.    Here’s the creek that was in the road.

Further down, Sherman Pippin (Bubby)and friends were working to get Barb’s old bridge (Barb is Bubby’s sister) off of Bubby’s bridge.

Whew!   Sometimes the day is a challenge.

How scary! I’m glad you’re okay, Eva! I can’t believe you drove through some of the water.

Yes…what happened to “turn around don’t drown?” I knew I wasn’t going to drown because the water was just headed through the guardrail, but it would have surely damaged the car had it moved it a few yards further. I just felt it move a bit from the rear but the front pulled it though. Scary. I was mistaken on the depth because the car in front of me went through but I realized later it was a car that wasn’t as low as my Prius. Ouch. I learned a lesson. I did not go through the Nordyke water for sure.

JSB Reunion pictures. I went to Va. High, graduated in 1979. I was expecting to see at least one Halstead or Stevens in the pictures, LOL. But I did see the “We remember” poster and the name “Mike Venable”. I played football with his little brother Tony, who said Mike died in his arms that day, so sad, and he was such a good athlete. Still brings chills over me hearing Tony recall that day!!

We have lost so many. I think that this reunion was very special in that we’re all passed who has the prettiest house, the best car, the cutest kids, kept her figure, etc. It was just good to see each other alive and well.

Kevin…great to hear you are at least a partial “Mendotian”! You will have some great neighbors. The heavy rain missed us. However, the river did rise a bit which is good for our last 10 days of kayaking this season.
